This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach grades PK3-5th! My students love music! They look forward to coming to my class and often don’t want to leave. I am a first year teacher and have only been with my students for 8 weeks, so I don’t have many stories to tell about them based on MY experience... BUT I’ve heard they had so much fun with their past music teachers and are a great group of kids! They absolutely love to dance and sometimes it’s hard to get them to stop! At our recent open house I was blown away by the amount of joy that parents expressed towards how much fun their children were having in my music class. I can’t wait to see what the rest of this fantastic year will bring!

My Project

Ukulele is an easy beginner instrument to learn. You only need a few chords to make a song. This would be great for my younger and older students, and they only have 4 strings vs the 6 stringed guitar. Music works both sides of your brain so this is a great opportunity for my younger students to get their hands on a different kind of instrument than the ones offered in my classroom. Lessons can vary from learning songs from La La Land and other musicals, popular pop songs, nursery rhymes, and folk songs. Many songs can be adapted to be learned and played. I also have a class set of drum sticks in my list so students can bucket drum. There are multiple techniques and spots to hit to produce difference sounds for a cool beat. These would be great to use for our Fall Festival in November. We are playing a thunder song that uses bucket drums and drum sticks! I can’t wait to give my students another musical learning opportunity!
