Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the excitement of playing recorder in music class in elementary school? Imagine how exciting it would have been to be taught to play a ukulele in school as well!

My school is a suburban school in a very low economic area.

My students have very little exposure to music when they come to me. Many do not even know basic nursery rhymes. I teach students from Kindergarten all the way to fifth grade. I also have an after-school music club which includes instrumental music, a 4th and 5th grade choir, and a yearly musical. I teach the students general music and singing skills. All students have an opportunity to play piano and African drums. The students in fourth grade all learn to play the recorder. I would like to enrich my fifth grade curriculum by adding another instrument for everyone to learn. These instruments would be used every year so this donation would benefit many children.

My Project

I would like to start a ukulele unit for my fifth grade students. In fourth grade all students learn to play recorder. In fifth grade many of my students learn to play band instruments but there are some who do not get that opportunity due to cost. I would like to have a more challenging instrument to teach to all of the fifth graders. This will help the students who are in band with the skills that they will need on their own instruments but also give the students not in band a chance to learn a new instrument. I believe that the ukulele would be a great instrument because it is in a lot of popular music now so the students will be interested and excited about learning it. It also is similar to the guitar so the students could go on to learn to play the guitar when they are older. It is smaller and easier to play than guitar so I feel it will be easier for beginners to learn. If I have a class set of ukuleles I could also start an after school ukulele club.

Research shows that learning to play an instrument improves all areas of learning including reading and math and improves test scores.

This donation will expand on all of the musical skills I have taught my students. They will learn to play an instrument that is used in folk and popular music today. A classroom set of ukuleles would give all of the fifth grade students a chance to learn to play an exciting instrument that they could play for the rest of their lives.
