This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are highly motivated, highly diverse, and highly dedicated to music and school. They love exploring sound and songs through our classes. They respect their equipment, and love using the instruments and tools to further their learning.

My students work together in harmony to create harmony.

They explore our culture by singing and dancing to folk songs. They learn history through exploring the composers and their famous musical works. They learn about sound and instrumental technique by playing recorders, xylophones, drums, and ukuleles.

My Project

My students were just given 17 ukuleles from a grant from the Texas Music Educators Association, and I am very excited to teach students melody and harmony using these awesome instruments.

As part of teaching my students how to be independent musicians, I would like them to be able to tune their ukuleles without my help.

String instruments constantly need to be retuned frequently because environmental factors make the strings go out of tune. With these clip on tuners, the students can tune their own instrument without my help. They can also tune their instrument in the room with other sounds happening - the tuner picks up the vibrations from the ukulele, and not the sound with a microphone.
