Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our TWI classroom, we think globally! Building a global community and building peace begin with awareness and knowledge of other people and cultures. In this project-based unit, we explore the geography, history, and culture of the Dominican Republic by reading the novel "Antes de ser libres."
Overall, we have a traditional middle school with a progressive staff that is working to transform into a place of community, personal growth, and academic rigor.
There are approximately 1,000 students at our middle school, and we are employing peace building and community building strategies to help students thrive during the tough times of pre-adolescence. We are striving to create a large middle school that feels like an extended family and is a safe, healthful place for students to learn about content, their peers, and themselves. Our school is a melting pot! About 40% of our students label their "race"/ethnicity as White, 40% Latino, 4% Black, 3% Asian and 2% Filipino, and 1% Native American. They are socio-economically diverse as well. Approximately half of our students are living near the poverty line and are eligible for free or reduced lunch. The students at our school are full of life and love of learning. They are eager to grow physically, intellectually and personally. "
My Project
This class set of novels and supplemental materials will be used by 7th grade students in our two-way immersion (Spanish) program as they undertake an exploration of the Caribbean. Students will read "Antes de ser libres" (Before We Were Free) in Spanish and will learn about the history, geography and culture of the Dominican Republic. Students also will have the opportunity to use technology to connect with students in Latin America. In addition, these materials will provide students with authentic opportunities to read, write, speak, and hear Spanish. What's more, using these materials, students will research the art and music of the Dominican Republic and create their own artwork. This project really offers students multiple layers of learning!
This project will positively impact students academically and personally.
Students will engage in the understanding of the history and culture of the Dominican Republic, and they will acquire Spanish language skills in the process. This unit integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, history, geography, art and technology. The project offers opportunities for students to explore our world of our Caribbean neighbors. This project is a great way for students to engage in global thinking!
