This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students, this pandemic year, have been amazing. They have been so resilient and even more hungry to learn new things and create in art class regardless of their classroom environment. Students have had to either learn art from home or learn in my classroom three feet apart with masks on this school year. Wherever they are, they still come in or Zoom in excited to learn about art. "What are we going to do today?" they eagerly ask me everyday.

Art is something they need more than ever this year.

This school year, due to the pandemic, students have been stressed greatly. They have been dealing with new social distancing rules, new classroom situations and other challenges, but I'm determined to bring art to them no matter what.

I teach elementary art to about 300 second through fifth-grade students from diverse cultures, special needs, and varying economic backgrounds. My goal is to provide all my art students with a nurturing, healthy, and inspiring art studio environment so they can create and express themselves in their art safely.

My Project

In preparation for next school year, I would like to add two more beautiful new marker board activity tables to a small section of my classroom that is used when there are two classes of students (doubled class) in my room. Currently, my art room has 9 of these new marker board activity tables which were funded by DonnorsChoose in the last two years. Eight of these tables are in a large section of my room and one of them is in the small section of my room. This forces me to use student desks for large classes on that side of the room. The picture above shows the one table and student desks in this small section of the room. Next year, I'm anticipating using that side of the room more. There will be more students and more doubled classes because the Zoom students will be returning to the school building.

These two new tables will replace the old desks and will finalize the studio look and feel of the room.

I am hoping this will inspire all the students to think and create safely in our art studio environment.
