This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live and go to school in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri. Our students are 100% free and reduced lunch recipients. We are a Leader In Me Lighthouse school (the sixth charter in the world!) that promotes the 7 Habits in our curriculum. We learn all about synergizing and other life skills to become better people as a basis for first grade.
My Project
In the spring, our students were working with whatever supplies they had. School supplies is much more expensive when it isn't back to school season, and many of my families were struggling financially. Many of my students didn't have basic school supplies, which hindered their progress. I did no-contact drop offs of school supplies to families, and they were so thankful! They were finally able to get assignments completed! One of the biggest wastes I saw was a waste of paper. Students would write one sentence or complete one math problem and use a whole new piece for the next assignment.
