This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am requesting your support in bringing the powerful book The Other Wes Moore into my classroom. I plan to use this thought-provoking memoir to inspire and challenge my high school seniors to think critically about identity, choices, and the consequences of the paths they choose in life.

The book The Other Wes Moore will allow my students to explore themes of personal responsibility, socio-economic factors, and the importance of education.

It tells the story of two men with the same name who grew up in similar circumstances but followed very different paths—one becoming the Governor of Maryland and the other serving a life sentence in prison. This story will engage my students in discussions about the power of choices, the impact of external influences, and the potential for transformation.

As seniors preparing to step into the next phase of their lives, my students are at a pivotal moment where their choices will profoundly impact their futures. Reading this book will help students better understand how circumstances and decisions shape their lives. They will have the chance to reflect on their own futures, gain empathy for others, and build critical thinking skills. By engaging with a real-life story, they will learn how to analyze complex social issues and make connections to their own experiences and aspirations.
