My Students

My third graders are always incredibly inquisitive and excited about coming to school. We have created a wonderful learning community.

Unfortunately, the majority of my students live in a neighborhood that is dominated by gang activity and racial unrest.

At age 8, many of my students have already been subject to the negative influences of gangs and violence. We are a Title I school with 85% of our students at a low-income level.

It has just been announced that my school district will begin our year remotely so this will be an anxious time for these eager learners. Our students are excited to be in third grade but may not have the books or magazines at home to read.

My Project

My new third graders had just started reading "big kid" chapter books in second grade when school closed down in March. Everything has changed for these students. They can no longer borrow books from their teacher or the school library because we will once again be doing distance learning this fall.

I would love for these eight-year-olds to read two actual chapter books this fall and not spend more time staring at a screen during distance learning.

I am hoping to establish a lifelong love of reading in these deserving kids!
