My classroom needs an addition to it's cozy corner.
I teach a great group of twelve fifth grade students.
My school is a District 75 school in Brooklyn which is for students with severe emotional, behavioral, and learning needs. They struggle with managing their emotions and behaviors and so they need a space where they can learn to manage these behaviors without negative consequences.
My Project
Because of generous donors, we are receiving two beanbags to begin the creation of our "comfy zone". Now we need the addition of a beautiful rug to make it complete. This comfy zone is place where an angry or sad student can go to calm down and regroup or it can be a space where students can relax and read a good book. One of the ways in which we start our day is by having a morning meeting where we discuss our highs and lows of the day before and just have great conversations! Currently they are at their desks during the meeting but it would be great to congregate at the rug during this morning ritual.
I want this class to feel like a home.
Our students spend so much time at school and so it should be as comforting and safe as possible. Students will enter the classroom and see a beautiful rug surrounded by comfortable seating and warm lighting. This simple aesthetic improvement can do wonders. They will know that there is place where they can go to make the right choice when they are struggling and they can start to learn to take control over their behaviors.
