This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of teaching art at a Title I middle school in the South Bronx. Our school is a high poverty/low-income school with 98% of students receiving free lunch, 25% of students receiving Special Education services, and 26% of students identified as ESL. Despite the many challenges they face, 224 students are ambitious and curious artists and scholars.

My students need Twisteez wire so that they can embark on a collaborative project inspired by the Gee's Bend quilting collective.

My students love learning about art history and love working in groups. This project is sure to inspire them and allow their creativity to soar!

My Project

The Quilts of Gee's Bend are quilts created by a group of women and their ancestors who live or have lived in the isolated African-American hamlet of Gee's Bend, Alabama along the Alabama River. The Quilts of Gee's Bend are considered to be unique, and one of the most important African-American visual and cultural contributions to the history of art within the United States.

In making their own wire quilts, students will learn about this important art collective, will work collaboratively in creating and will refine their motor skills by working with wire.

These wire quilts will be displayed throughout the building, bringing beauty and joy to our school.
