My Students

My middle school students come from diverse backgrounds. They have varying strengths and weaknesses in the school curriculum. They can shine like the brightest stars!

Many of our students are detail oriented, show an aptitude for the arts, and are very enthusiastic about all the arts and everything that it has to offer them.

They have shown their teachers that they learn best when they are engaged and having fun. Learning about music with a hands-on approach is very important in my attempt to keep them active and engaged.

My Project

During our unit on Latin America and through our work with Quaver's Marvelous World of Music, we will explore the geography, culture, and music of Latin America. We will explore the different rhythms and nuances found in the various styles of Latin American music. These styles include the samba, merengue, and salsa.

With the tubs, buckets, and cans we bring from home, and the supplies (tape, glue, twine, paint, and construction paper) I am asking for in this project, we will be constructing our own twine tub drums, 5 gallon drums, and coffee can bongos.

Our handcrafted drums will imitate the unique instruments found in Latin America. The children will learn various rhythms that are unique to this part of the world and perform them on these homemade instruments. They will also work as part of a group to create a piece of original music in the style of Latin American music.

I am sure that the experiences they have and the connections they make through this project, my students will gain new respect and admiration for the people of Latin America.
