My Students

Although ours is a rural community, most of my students do not have an understanding of gardening or the life cycles of plants. In these times of economic uncertainties I believe that my students should have enough knowledge to grow their own food even if they don't want to go into farming.

My students come from a poor rural community.

The high school population is approximately 40% minority with nearly 62% of the student body eligible for free or reduced lunches. But for my students a lack of funds is just another hurdle to overcome, it is not their identity. They are extremely creative and intelligent and they have dreams of improving their lives and their communities. Our school has had a greenhouse for the past 6 years but due to lack of funding it has taken a long time and a lot of work to bring the greenhouse into operation. My students have been excited about doing the work and they look forward to the classes that we have in the garden area. However, we need additional supplies in order to get the maximum benefit from the greenhouse - there are so many things that my students can learn from this hands on work.

My Project

With the resources that I have requested my students will be able to do hands on agricultural research. I am requesting a hydroponics kit, a plant cloning kit, a root system display and petri dishes. The recent publicity about cloning livestock and plants, has stimulated my student's imagination and curiosity. I want to take advantage of this and capture their imagination. Our country needs more scientists and I have every confidence that my students can be those scientists. I know that my students have an excellent work ethic and that they are highly intelligent. They deserve the best equipment and materials that can be provided.

My project is important because it gives my students hands on experience in growing plants.

Not only is this information important for passing their graduation exams, but my students may be able to use their experiences with plants to raise their own food and their own gardens.
