My Project

In November of 2022 the United Nations Environmental Program published an article entitled "The Environmental Costs of Fast Fashion". In this article is a video of a Kenyan spoken word poet Beatrice Kariuki, and I highly recommend you watch. "'We need circular industries where old looks are made new, 'Kariuki says in the video. 'Less packaging, more reuse. Threads that last.'"

This project will be fast fashion turned into upper elementary art projects instead of materials to fill the landfill.

In our art class we work with materials from a variety of sources in our community with donations from home decorating stores, consignment store customers, and citizens in our community. With these sewing machines, students will be able to take fabric that has been deemed no longer useful and turn it into something else with their imagination.

Through this experience of recycling, student perspective can be nurtured to include and welcome sustainable relationships with products and resources. The current popular thought in our economy is that of the 'linear use' of materials that results in waste that becomes pollution. The labor to produce is undervalued and unappreciated. With the use of tools and skills, 'circular use' of materials can be implemented. Projects like this one, can empower youth to find multiple uses for products and materials around them. Students can gain an understanding of the labor and thought processes that are required in the production process. Youth can put their imaginations to use, to help reduce environmental impact, and raise the awareness of others by what they create. You can help give them tools to do it.
