My band students are at an urban, Title I school. Over 65% of my students are low-income, so they are unable to receive supplemental music instruction through private lessons or step-up materials, and struggle to obtain instrument playing supplies. About 98% of students play on school owned instruments.
They love music and come to class daily with passion and excitement.
My students are excited to learn, curious and willing to take risks. Their positive attitudes are so inspiring. Music really does change lives.
In our band program, I focus on providing a safe environment where my students can develop strong character, become excellent all-around students and grow into wonderful musicians with a life-long love of music.
My Project
I have very diverse students, from a wide range of cultures. When they enter the band room, we become a large family, where we celebrate each other as we make music.
Students need to see themselves reflected in the music we play, so I intentionally select inclusive music from around the world, representative of many cultures, and from minority, female and LGBTQ+ composers so my students see themselves in the music we perform.
In order for my students to perform multi-cultural music, they need to be able to hear their instruments. Our audiences want to hear and celebrate the music we make together in a band.
Over time, instrument cables break, and sound is lost. This project will give my students working instrument cables. I included the wireless transmitter to give my students more freedom in their performance set-ups and collaborative music. The wireless transmitter also allows anyone in the room to transmit to the stereo for all to hear and keeps us safe by not dragging a long cable through the band room.
