My Students

I am the media specialist at a middle school in a high poverty community. Students at my school have all the usual middle school issues to deal with (e.g. bullying, peer pressure, self-esteem), but also many others that come with growing up in a low income family.

Exposure to violent crime is common for students growing up in poverty.

There are students at my school whose only meals are the breakfast and lunch they eat at school. Many students at my school are growing up in a single-parent home or are being raised by a relative. Some students live with a foster family. There is a lot of transition in the student population at my school. Students move from school to school within and outside the district. Being homeless is also a reality for some of my students. Additionally, my school serves students whose families are stationed at the local military base. Students from military families have to deal with one or even both parents being deployed and away from the family for extended periods of time.

My Project

Bibliotherapy has been proven to be an effective means of helping children to cope. There is a definite need for a bibliotherapy collection in the library at my school. My school has only two guidance counselors (one of whom collaborated with me on this project) who have their hands full counseling over 500 students with such extreme needs. Having a collection of books that the counselors and even faculty and staff could refer students to would help tremendously. Even those students who do not end up in the counselor’s office would benefit from the collection.

Reading about other students who are dealing with the same issues as they are would help students at my school cope with their problems.

It would help them to understand that they are not alone and that there is hope.
