Turn Our School Into a Compost Drop Off Site

Help me give my students tools to compost, organize seeds, and make signs to put around the campus to encourage the staff and community to deliver their food waste to our compost system.

My Project

There is a lot of research on the benefits compost has for soil, but very little research on how compost tea affects hydroponic systems. A Tower Garden representative told my students' compost tea has very little value for plants grown hydroponically. He recommended that only the expensive synthetic nutrient solution sold by the company would work. My students, however, decided to experiment, and through trial and error, they developed a compost tea recipe that works even better than synthetic nutrients. Like what humus does for soil, compost tea regulates the pH of our hydroponic towers, placing it in the ideal 6-7 range and keeping it there! This was not the case when we used to use synthetic nutrients, which would quickly make the tower solution turn acidic and would require regular pH adjustments nearly every three days.

With your donation, high school students will be able to expand our school's composting production.

The Gardening Club and Ethnobotany students have plans to get the community outside of our school involved and turn our school into a compost drop-off site. This would require clear signage and extra equipment such as totes to be positioned outside the fence of our compost area so that the public can drop off their food waste. The gardening club students have already spoken to a coffee shop and numerous food businesses blocks away from the school who have expressed interest in dropping their waste outside the fence. The numerous staff who bring their food waste to work could also benefit from the drop-off setup since the freezers that we originally used to store the food waste are now being used by the culinary classes.
