This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our academy is priority school located in Detroit, Michigan. Families who reside in the community suffer from “unemployment that’s almost three times the national average, and just 10 percent of the residents have an associate’s/bachelor’s degree.” Since most of the students are at least two grade levels behind, the curriculum is very rigorous focusing on closing academic gaps. This affects extra curricular activities, hands-on activities, and learning while having fun. Our students have grit! They want to overcome the obstacles!
My Project
Our Green Team was just established during the spring. We planted our first garden! Students are eager to learn about urban gardening and protecting our environment which will transform our academy into a Michigan Green School. The activities required to meet this goal needs additional supplies, funding, and partnerships. Students will be able to observe how to make compost, continue gardening, and experience recycling plastic, aluminum, and paper. We are also researching to schedule field trips highlighting environmental sciences. These hands-on opportunities will give students real world experiences to share with our community. We are focused on improving student achievement and school culture by means of providing true learning experiences.
