My Students

My class is technology. My students gravitate towards hands on activities and often want to create things of their own.

We are a public middle school.

Sixth and 7th graders take technology classes for half a year each. When they get to 8th grade they can elect for a full year. These children are under resourced and as a Title I school, struggle with resources at home as well. We are a school whose mission it is to prepare our students for careers in the 21st Century. Many of our students want to pursue a future in technology - whether engineering, programming, etc. We want to be a true S.T.E.M. school.

My Project

Students will be learning about iterative design processes to promote understanding of engineering practices relating to mobile robotics. The students have the freedom of their imagination in the design phase, but many times they are not able to visualize and see their ideas to fruition. The 3D printer would make this possible from the basics of creating custom gears, to chassis that allow their visions to come to life! They would learn S.T.E.M. engineering practices such as digital design in CAD software and formal programming to make their designs come to life. The possibilities are infinite!

I believe a 3D printer would help to expand the imaginations of my students by turning them into creators.

Additionally, they would be able to share their learning beyond the classroom walls and truly make them 21st Century citizens and future engineers.
