Tuners and Microphones For The Concert Band Students!

My Project

The state of CT has identified 6 strategic learning acceleration habits to support student learning. Of these six strategies, three apply in utilizing tuners in the band classroom. Each student will have access to using an individual tuner in order to help improve musicianship as students learn how to perform an instrument. Strategy #(4)Utilize formative assessment processes and multiple means of demonstrating learning to monitor student progress. CONNECTION: When students use a digital tuner, the device is connected to a microphone connected to students individual instrument. The tuner will pick up whether the student is playing in tune, sharp or flat, showing a visual for students with a light, indicating if their pitch is in tune. Students will be able to learn what notes on their instrument are commonly sharp or flat and will be able to see if they are supporting their sound with enough air, learning to adjust their pitch. Strategy #(5) Provide feedback to set learning goals and adjust learning sequence. Innovative assessment practices can be identified. CONNECTION: Using the information that the tuner provides, students learn how to adjust their embouchure when playing. Playing in tune is a crucial skill for students to develop. Using tuners when learning scales, can help students develop a better pitch center and understanding of pitch tendencies. Tuners will train students to become better listeners, being self-aware of their playing. Strategy #(6) Evaluate mastery and adjust learning plans based on student progress while maintaining a high level of rigor. CONNECTION: Using a tuner to try to achieve a perfect sound, is an example of a rigorous exercise in band! You are either in tune or you are out of tune. Over time, students will learn how to play with better intonation by using a tuner.
