My Students

I teach a very large student body at my school (1000+ students). I gratefully serve daily as their enthusiastic music specialist. My students are comprised of a diverse and eclectic mix of cultures and socioeconomic classes spanning all ages and all stages of academic achievement. They stand as a beautiful celebration of the human spirit and diversity! Through music, my students creatively explore ways to communicate who they are, where they have come from, and share points of light from the journey they are taking. Henry Matisse once said, "Creativity takes courage." In my classes that is certainly the case!

Music provides me with a wonderful opportunity to help my students develop a healthy sense of self and community through creatively integrated experiences that enhance their ability to learn and grow.

It gives them what they believe is a fun "break" from learning when in fact, they are learning and growing continually as they perform, play, and create in my classroom!

My Project

I have so many ideas about exploring the versatility of Tubanos, and I already have loads of rhythm, literature, and cultural experiences planned for my music students if I am fortunate enough to procure these instruments. Tubanos are perfect for exposure to African, Native American, and Oriental drumming, dancing, rhythm, and art. In my music classroom, students will be given opportunities to not only learn rhythms to perform on the tubanos, but to compose their own using rhythmic sentences, poetry, or nursery rhymes for inspiration. Rhythm is a vital part of studying music and helps with math competency and higher-level thinking as well as having unlimited language arts applications. I will incorporate all of these elements as I teach children through "call and response" activities on Tubanos to help them identify specific rhythms and learn to listen and respond appropriately. Additionally, they will play the tubanos in a colorful accompaniment with other percussion instruments including sticks and student made water bottle shakers or otherwise culturally appropriate rhythm instruments. What an exciting punctuation when exploring literature, nature, and art! Finally, we will tap into all of these experiences and pair them with world folk songs and dance to round out individual class compositions for performance. Try to imagine the family and parental engagement when students bring their world music experiences home and share them?

Donating these Tubanos will provide my students with amazing world cultural experiences and unique opportunities to expand their rhythmic understanding and competency in composition and performance.

These types of experiences not only provide excellent integration with academic subjects, but they help children connect with cultures across the globe and provide them with a greater understanding of the diverse people we share this planet with, thus creating a safer place for us all.
