My Students

My students are a diverse bunch of curious, intelligent and active 4th grade children. The key word in caps there is active and, what I've noticed throughout the year is, they learn and do best when they are comfortable. My classroom setup is great in the fact that it has an ample amount of space; but I feel that space, unfortunately, is limited because of the classic desk and chair setup.

Introducing a new and flexible-style table and chair arrangement would totally benefit my students!

When we do group work, there's always a student on a team who loves to move around and solicit his neighbors' ideas. Another likes to write standing up. And still, another finds it easier to alternate between a stool and a seat at the round table. (Hmm, maybe she's summoning her inner King Arthur!)

In conclusion, my students would love to be able to use a new flexible-table arrangement to enhance their learning styles and focus their energies. We've seen it work in other classrooms and other schools. It's about time my students stopped sitting and started STANDING -- for their curiosity, their activity, and themselves!

My Project

Though I may not be the best at jigsaws, this classroom puzzle is easy to figure out! By being able to purchase 8 triangular-shaped desks, almost half of my class will get the chance to create their own true workstations! These desks can stand alone for one student or be pieced together to create a larger workstation for four students. And with wheels on each leg, there'll be no more complaints about sitting for too long or not being able to see the SmartBoard. And the best part about it is that students can configure their desks they way they want. Student choice is so important. With that area covered, my students can focus on their student voice. They'll be able to take control of their workspace, their projects, their teammates. Collaboration can't happen on its own. Your help will be a huge step towards purchasing the equipment they need to make their lessons come alive. My students will be able to enjoy their upcoming novel, Any Small Goodness (about cultural diversity, maturity and goodness regarding a middle-school boy in East L.A.) using their rolling tables as the perfect resource on which to spread out their books, vocabulary packets and graphic organizers. And during Social Studies, students will be able to roll out their maps, historical reference resources and pictures as we delve into the Civil War and Industrial Revolution. They can't wait to get started!
