My Students

Students absolutely adore math class when they get to play math games or use hands-on materials to practice skills and concepts they're learning. It's a great way to make math class collaborative too--pairing kids in ability groups as they work together to investigate math problems.

Our Blue Ribbon school is located in a small Alaskan seaside town.

Our children are hardy and spend a lot of time outside no matter the weather. Due to the high level of poverty, our school is a safe-haven for many of them, as well as a warm, clean place to get two square meals five days a week. Our school has a wonderful group of teachers who work together to help all children become learners. Our hallways are lined with student art, and we stay after school if need be to give extra help to students. Our test scores show that we've succeeded in making readers out of our kiddos, but the math scores aren't as high as they could be. As a whole school, we plan to focus on improving our teaching methods in math class in the upcoming 2014-2015 school year. My students will learn so much more about math if they have enough math supplies to allow them to investigate concepts with hands-on exploration that also allows them to work in groups, which increases their ability to learn during play.

My Project

Last year, my students practiced geometry by teaming up in a game of Geometry Jeopardy. They looked at drawings of 3D shapes to help them formulate their answers. How wonderful it would be next year if my students could actually hold and examine real 3D geometric shapes as they played the game. They would be able to remember where a vertex is, what a face is, or what a side is, if they had previously handled real shapes. The same goes for Tangrams. I have wonderful books with exciting Tangram puzzles in them but no Tangram pieces. We've made some out of paper before, but they do not fit together nicely on the puzzle. Through Tangrams, kids learn about spatial relationships. They also help kids learn geometric terms and develop stronger problem solving skills. Research shows that they even help children perform better in general mathematics. There are so many ways that hands-on math materials contribute to learning! Additionally, they contribute to a fun, happy classroom!

Your donations to my classroom will impact at least 25 students per year.

The learning style shown to make learning permanent is hands-on or experiential learning. Please help make math class more "real" for my students. I know they will value the time spent investigating answers to math problems while actually holding and manipulating objects related to the topic at hand.
