Help Mrs. Bucknam

I teach 1st grade at a low-income school in the northwest. We are a Title 1 school, with more than 75% of students below the poverty line. My students have no books at home and lack access to the public library. Therefore, the literacy exposure at school has become very important. We are constantly trying to expand the students experiences through reading. Without good non-fiction books containing true facts and important information, it is very challenging to help my kids to learn subject-related contents, such as social studies, science, or health. Just recently, as I tried to explain to my kids the food pyramid, I felt saddened that I was unable to find quality books in my classroom to use. The only pictures I could find were the Fred Meyer ads. They have also asked me about the men on the back of the coins. I felt bad for not having books on those famous presidents.

I am asking for a selection of non-fiction books related to the content we learn in first grade. Ideally I could use one per week for my students to independently read and respond to. Currently I borrow them from the public library. But many times, I had to skip the lesson because they were not available at the time. It would great if we had a copy in our classroom, so children can refer to it at any time, or review the book as they need it.

My students need a classroom set of good non-fiction books with true facts, such as biographies, the nutrition-related and so on.

Start young, start early, give them a chance, let them shine. How beautiful is that - the wide naive smile with a few missing teeth of a 6 year-old!
