My Students

I teach 8th graders in a suburban school in Queens, New York. I have 165 students that range from advanced students that take the Living Environment Regents course for high school credit to general education classes that take General Science. In the general science classes, there are high performing students, English Language learners, and students with special needs that are in an ICT setting where there is a special education teacher that co-teaches with me to help all students achieve.

My Project

Different sciences are used to solve crimes. The kits I requested include techniques include how to distinguish fingerprints, blood typing, test for bacteria, blood splatter, examining evidence using microscopes, and analyzing chemical tests. Students will have to learn about the science behind all these activities while engaging their critical thinking skills in order to solve the crimes.

I believe that by providing a real world application for students, they will have a better understanding of how different branches of science work together and not in isolation.

It will also help foster a love of learning science and create an engaging student environment.
