Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After 8 years of rebuilding our art program, I don't know anywhere else you could possibly find more dedicated and loyal students. The love they share for our classroom, our projects and each other is the biggest joy to experience!

My Project

Each quarter my students create their first project with a focus on who they are and as a celebration of them being in Art for that quarter. Most of the time this is something simple, done on paper, and with standard art materials. For this project, I want to give them something new and exciting and what better way to express themselves than with something completely handmade and with materials of their choosing.

These days celebrating diversity, individuality, and giving students opportunities to express themselves is key to making connections, building relationships, and community; which is exactly what I hope this project provides.

For this project, Rope Rainbows, students would have the opportunity to choose colors that they feel represents their rainbow (themselves) and to add embellishments as they see fit. This is also the perfect opportunity to discuss our families, our culture, and how we can represent those through color along with how those things build our own characteristics.

Textile projects such as this one are hard to provide to students due to the large class sizes and price of materials so this project would be an amazing treat for my students. For this project, students would each need enough rope to construct a rainbow with however many rays they select, a variety of colored threads for wrapping the rope, Bristol backing, beads for embellishment, and hot glue sticks to attach the backing. I teach all grades, all levels, and hands-on construction projects such as these really help build skills across all my learners and truly build a stronger community among my students.
