About My Students

Sascha, Alexis, Kyra, Abraham, Mosai, Jada and their classmates attend a progressive public high school that creates learning environments based on external, experiential education. Recognized as a ”non-traditional academic haven for struggling students,” our students sought out the program because of the experiential learning opportunities through internships. Our students know they learn differently- some learn by seeing some by hearing, others by doing. They came to our school to receive an individualized education that will help them to reach their full potential. These students have transferred from educational institutions from all over New York City. Our school population includes students who are overage and under-credited with over 10 percent homeless, living in temporary shelters, or in foster care; safety transfers–students; young mothers and fathers utilizing on-campus childcare services; and teens leaving residential psychiatric facilities and correctional facilities.

Our school helps provide a diverse group of committed interns to businesses and organizations across all five boroughs, breaking down barriers and prejudices against the city's hardest-to-reach young people while providing them with real-world skills to help jump-start their future.

Many of the students in MAD Academy have struggled with addiction, trauma, living in the shelter system, and mental health issues, hospitalizations and medications. The connection between creativity, mental illness and the damaging lifestyles of artists is well-known. Our goal in MAD Academy is to help students develop positive behaviors and habits while building a strong supportive community so that they can be their best. We seek to undo the myth that one must be a tortured artist and that pursuing a career in the arts isn't sustainable or fulfilling.

In Their Own Words

We would love an experience where we can do something we are already passionate about and do every day, but also something in which we have room to grow. It is our dream and plan to make a living out of making music and art but there are still a lot of things we don’t fully understand. Pretty much anything anyone has to offer to teach us, we are willing to learn. Education is an incredible thing but it has become an unwanted obligation for a lot of people. The fact that we can learn about what we love while getting an education is an incredible opportunity.

You know what they say- the best people to learn from are the people who have been, there done that! This will not only help us excel in our growth and knowledge but it will also open many doors to infinite possibilities! This is the the pathway to the future! One of things we love about arts and music is the way it is very diverse. Creative artists learned how to change the world through what they do and to make something different or something that the world needed at that time. Life, art and music is always evolving. New styles, beats, lyrics, colors, ideas that you never would have imagined. We are eclectic and like a little bit of everything. If it were not for our art and music, it would be hard to express oneself.

We feel we already posses some knowledge of design and creation but would like to continue growing and learning from professionals. It is our opinion that you can never fully master something and we have only begun to scratch the surface of our artistic potential and need mentors and a suitable environment to help shape it. We are also looking forward to ample networking opportunities, which we pride ourselves in our ability to form quick and strong connections with many different types of people and hold onto those connections for a long time. It is important with the creative arts industry. We seek to make numerous friends in order to further ourselves in the creative world.
