Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

While this might be a long shot, I would like to get sponsorship for at least one of my senior students to visit Spain in the spring. A small of students in the Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Literature class and I are planning a trip for 10 days to visit various cities of the country that they have read about and studied for the past four years. We will be visiting M?laga, Granada, Seville, C?rdoba, Toledo, and Madrid. There will be sightseeing tours and visits to special attractions such as Alhambra, the Prado, and a visit to the Palacio Real. For the past four years, our students have studied the language, culture, and history of several Spanish-speaking countries. Since they were freshmen, they have become acquainted with far away countries through the literature they have read, art they have studied, and research they have done to better understand the culture. Oscar de la Hoya ?nimo Charter High School is a public charter high school that serves the East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights community; and, although the large majority of our students are Latino and already speak Spanish, they have come to appreciate the differences in our culture and understand the similarities that they share with a people thousands of miles away. This will be our first graduating class of seniors, most of whom have never left the country, much less the state of California. With this trip to Spain, I am hoping to bring to life everything that they have studied during their high school years and prepare them for life in post-secondary education world by exposing them to different cultures, customs, and beliefs. The six students who have applied are all enrolled in the AP Spanish Literature course, have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA), and are on the verge of venturing into college/university life. The trip to Spain for ten days includes airfare, hotel accommodations, and tours. The students have taken upon themselves to write letters asking for donations and grants. I am helping them out by organizing and sponsoring several fundraising events in the next couple of months. With your donation, our students can spend more time working on their college applications, yet look forward to a rewarding trip to Spain in the spring that would open their eyes to a new world and prepare them for life at the university level by exposing them to different experiences.
