Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am seeking funding for an after-school jewelry making club called Tremont Trinkets. This club will have a three-fold effect on student achievement at my school. First, students will create wearable products they can sell to generate money for school trips, supplies, or other extracurricular activities. The club will also allow those students who don't stand out in sports or academics to explore their creative abilities. Finally, Tremont Trinkets will give students a sense of accomplishment and build their self-esteem, which can benefit their overall school performance. I make and sell earrings in my spare time, a hobby that has quickly grown into a passion. I wear my creations to work and students are always asking how I make them. Instead of giving students a general summary of what I do, I want to teach them to make their own jewelry. Currently, I teach literacy at a middle school in a typical neighborhood in Bronx, New York. There is violence and drugs, and many of my students have experienced some type of family struggle. Despite this, my students are good kids who are generally well behaved. However, there are those kids who without the proper support could easily lose their way. That support should come in the form of a well developed after-school program with both academic and artistic offerings. While my school offers some academic enrichment and test preparation, it offers few after school clubs. Students can participate in a student council and a basketball team. There's no drama club, no music program, nothing. Therefore, a desperate need exists for my students to have a place to express their creative energies. With my jewelry making program, I plan to serve 15-20 students one day a week. Each student will need a jewelry making guide, two pairs of pliers, an assortment of beads and metal findings, and containers for storing their items. Students will start with basic designs and will hopefully graduate to more complex, creative designs. Again, Tremont Trinkets is an interesting, hands-on learning experience that will teach students basic entrepreneurial skills, allow them to explore their artistic abilities, and will build their self-confidence.
