Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom smiling, excited and eager to learn every morning! They look forward to the challenges that face them academically but most importantly, how to figure out a way to solve them productively. This year more than ever, my students have shown respect towards one another understanding that we are different, but we smile in the same language. They have learned their friends languages to greet one another. There is nothing more beautiful than listening to a Chinese student greeting the class by saying 'buenos dias' or a Spanish student greeting friends in Polish! For every birthday, we sing Happy Birthday in Chinese, Spanish, and English! Even though they are on different levels academically, they share some similarities.

My students are all English Language Learners.

They are learning English together while remembering their native languages and cultures. The school I teach at is a title 1 school and all students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My Project

From September to June students are taught to write in different genres. They learn to write narrative, informational and opinion writing pieces. Students would benefit by having their own writing binder to store all of their writing pieces. Sheet protectors will help keep their writing neat. Students will use yellow paper to write drafts and white paper to publish writing pieces. During the editing and revising process they will use colored pencils to help see at a glance how their writing has improved throughout the year. Highlighted writing rubrics will be stored in the binders as well to show current levels and next steps clearly stated.

A student's growth in writing is very impressive, however much easier to notice when it's organized!

Students can then compare their writing from September to other writing pieces as the year passes. These basic writing supplies will help each student treasure their writing. Having a binder consisting of all their writing pieces will not only show how they've improved in writing throughout the year but also teach them how to cherish their writing pieces. Noticing growth will motivate them to be the best writers they can be and increase their writing stamina!
