My Students

Nothing is more exciting than hunting for treasure! Creating an environmental education unit that hooks into the fun of hunting for treasure through orienteering and geocaching will engage each and every student.

Our classroom is a 4th grade classroom in Washington state.

We are a high needs community with 67% of our students receiving free or reduced lunches. We are a minority majority school district. Our classroom needs additional materials to support our blooming interest in the outdoors, our environment, and the uniqueness of our state. The opportunity to step outside of the classroom, to provide experiences and opportunities that might not otherwise exist, and to instill a respect and sense of responsibility of our environment and our place in it is the goal of our learning and growth this year.

My Project

We are requesting 2 GPS units that will further enhance the treasure hunting experience, topographic maps to provide additional tools and resources about our geologic area, a demonstration compass and class set of individual compasses to learn how to use, and a variety of texts to aid our immersion into the world of geocaching and orienteering. We will be participating in both types of activities.

Not one of my students has held a compass or heard of orienteering or geocaching.

I want to instill in them a love of nature and the environment. Through this project, students will learn skills that they may never have had the opportunity to learn. They will learn to work together, solve problems, rely on themselves, their minds and bodies. This project will provide tools and experiences that are new, exciting, and engaging to students that do not have much experience in the outdoors.
