A pivotal moment in 50 students' education came last spring when students from my School's 7th grade class traveled to Washington D.C. It was a time of firsts. It was the first time most of the students traveled out of state without their parents. It was the first time they got to teach their teachers. It was the first time all the history lessons of the year clicked and a sea of "ah has" emanated from inside the Capitol Rotunda. It was the first time we have visited our U.S. Senators' offices and entered the brand new US Capitol Visitor Center. We are looking forward to a repeat of these life-changing experiences with an incredible group of scholars this year. In June, the students will travel to our nation's capital for three days to experience the richness of history, exciting political climate of change and higher education opportunities. Of course, higher education is just one piece of Washington D.C.'s rich tapestry. The students will visit the monuments, museums, White House, Capitol Building, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, The Smithsonian and other national treasures. Groups of students will research each one of the stops on our itinerary and the students will serve as our guides giving us the history of the site and important things we should notice along the way. The students will have a chance to practice their public speaking while seeing our history first-hand. The students representing our Charter School in Washington D.C. will be distinguished student leaders. To be eligible, the students will undergo a rigorous evaluation process; their behavior, commitment to BWCCS values, academic performance and dedication to community service will be monitored to determine the students' eligibility. These student leaders will have distinguished themselves as most deserving of this experience to enrich their middle school career and poise them for their future success. Please consider that your contribution, however large or small, will truly change the lives of these students who will lead their university classes of 2019. The uncertain economy and rising costs has threatened this experience, standard in so many schools, for us. This trip now costs double what it did a few years ago for the same experience, WE NEED YOUR HELP - Thanks. Think about a donation to sponsor just one child. Divide the total cost of the proposal by 50 and you can send one amazing 7th grader to Washington D.C -- then tell your friends!
