My Students

Hola, Bonjour, Aloha, Ni Hoa! How many ways can you say hello? I hope my students are able to say hello in many languages after a year in my classroom, learning about other cultures, traditions, foods, music, and languages. Unfortunately, many of my students have never left their neighborhood.

I teach excited, thoughtful, vibrant third graders in a low income, high needs school.

As a charter school we are fortunate to have a longer school day that allows us to teach all the subjects, including social studies. My students are fascinated by what they see in books, and the worlds that open up for them through pictures. Unfortunately, we currently do not have a social studies curriculum, and far too quickly that time is used up by other subjects.

My Project

This project helps realize a dream I have had as a teacher for five years. The materials in this project are the core of photos, foods, flags, and costumes that will help students experience other cultures. Imagine traveling to other countries all without leaving the comfort of your classroom. Through pictures, costumes, music, food, dance, and language, students will be able to experience the rich cultures in countries they have never even imagined. With passports in hand, each unit will let students explore a different geographic region, journeying the jungles of Brazil and the desserts of West Africa, dancing the salsa in Mexico and listening to the bells of Tibet. I have been collecting resources for years, and am thrilled to finally have the chance to share my love of travel and culture with the students I teach. What better way to tap into the creativity and wonder innate to a nine year old than to give them a chance to travel places they otherwise would never go?

School should be a place of magic.

Each day should provide the place and opportunity for students to explore and stretch farther than they would go on their own. This project gives students a sense of their place in the world, and will help teach them a respect for other cultures and traditions than their own. For just twenty dollars per student, my third graders will become world travelers and will get to go on adventures beyond their dreams!
