Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th grade social studies - where the focus is on world cultures- but at our school, we call this course "Nonfiction Studies" in order to impress upon the students the importance of literacy in all of their classes.

My students are predominately Hispanic/Latino, and the majority of them will be the first in their families to go to college.

Many of these students have never left the city boundary, and this makes the study of world cultures all the more important for them. Because our focus is on nonfiction studies, we use nonfiction books to learn about the people and places of the world - the problem is, we don't have many books!

My Project

I am requesting nonfiction trade books so that my students will be able to practice their nonfiction reading skills while exploring cultures, people, and places that are new to them. Right now, we have access to text books and Internet resources, but we do not have many books ... and want to read! There is nothing else like a good "old fashioned" book to open kids' eyes to new worlds.

Your donations will give my students access to the wide variety of people and places there are on this planet.

Without your help, we would not be able to get our hands on so many different interesting nonfiction books.
