This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Books allow students to learn vocabulary and sequencing naturally. During a single speech therapy session, I may work with 4-5 students, all working on different goals. Books allow for an efficient way to target multiple goals using one source. Currently, I work at two elementary schools, so I am toting my materials back and forth between the two schools. A tote would make this easier to carry all the materials, and books are highly portable. Making sure students have fun and interesting therapy materials to use is a component of motivating them. I have noticed more research coming out about the dangers of too much screen time. Books online are available, but nothing beats a physical book in your hand that you can touch and pause to reflect on.

Books can inspire children, increase their imagination, and provide an excellent context for learning a language.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them increased exposure to expressive and receptive language modalities. Books can be used in a variety of speech therapy goals. When targeting early language, we can focus on the nouns, pronouns, and verbs, and create 2-3 word sentences about the book. For students using a communication voice output device, we can work on matching, making sentences, and basic concepts. Student's working on articulation can find their speech sound in the words of the book, practice making sentences with those words, and use the words with their sound in it to discuss the book. Additionally, we can work on sequencing, syntax, "wh" questions, and comparing and contrasting items. When working on social skills, books help us work on maintaining topic, making appropriate comments, and learning about others.

Books offer not only an easy way to transport therapy items but can target a wide variety of skills.
