My Students

When I think of elementary school, I envision a child's first encounter with the world. A meeting full of exploration and wonder between the littlest and the biggest things our world has to offer. Language is one way students engage the world, but my students and I are limited by the digital divide.

My students are a diverse group of kindergarteners through eighth graders who live in an area of Philadelphia that is increasingly becoming more dangerous and suffering from the effects of urban blight.

Even though they live in what is less than an ideal environment, they come to school eager to learn a second language and engage with a global Spanish speaking community.

My Project

I am requesting a Kindle Fire because it is an inexpensive way to access materials through on-line bookstores and it also has numerous applications specifically designed to make literature and information accessible from anywhere within the school. While our building has WiFi access, teachers are not given functional laptops to access the Internet, thus making on-line resources inaccessible.

My project is important because our school is in desperate need of books and materials that are easily accessible via the Internet.

The fact that I have limited access to these resources limits my ability to provide my students with the quality education they deserve.
