Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach reading to a lively bunch of 4th graders. Our school is in a high need community in New York City. Most of the students in the school qualify for free lunch due to their parents' low income. Most of our students live in poverty, which makes it difficult to depend on parents for donations.

Can you imagine traveling to magic worlds in which you can be any character you wish? That sounds amazing! Doesn’t it? Well, my students wish to be able to do that with a library full of exciting books. However it is hard, when all we have is a library full of old books, which many are falling apart. This year, my students inherited a very old classroom library. Everyday, at least one child comes up to me to show me how the pages are falling out of their books. While we don't mind bandaging our books up with tape and staples; some of our books have been bandaged more than they should. My students would love to be able to go "book shopping" (this is when they pick books on their reading level to keep in their reading bags during the week) without digging through the old, worn-out books. My children, would love to be able to take a book home to read, without worrying about the book falling apart in front of their eyes.

My students need a new, fresh library with books on their individual reading level. We have asked for a variety of high interest books on various reading levels to help us rebuild our library. I know these books will excite my students to the point that they would want to read more; thus improving on their reading ability while enjoying exiting books. That is our goal!

You can make it happen!! Your help will make my students very happy. With your donation, the students will be able to “shop for books” and travel to different places with their imagination and be different characters; while becoming better readers.
