I teach fourth grade in a Special Education/ General Education CTT class in New York. It is Collaborative Team Teaching with a General and Special Education Teacher working together as one. My students come from a low income area, some live in shelters and many live without the help, love and guidance of their parents.

My students do not have a lot of resources available to learn about the world. The Weekly Readers student magazine would help them view the world, and is a great way to travel by opening up a book or magazine. They do not have a globe of the world, nor a cozy atmosphere to sit beside me as I read.

I have found that my students write and read best when they are familiar with the subject. Fourth graders take a social studies test next year and need to develop their skills now. It is crucial that they know map and global skills. Touching a globe with their fingers, reading and seeing pictures in a Weekly Reader, or sitting beside me in a rocking chair as I read, makes they feel loved and secure, as I expose them to the world.

Your help will ensure that my students will have a true knowledge of the world around them. A fascination in reading about travel, cultures, countries and ethnic food that each and every one of them can get by opening a book and taking them there. This project is very important and your help would truly make a difference.
