Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach ELL students, many of whom have large families and multiple generations in the same home or apartment. The fear of COVID and actual positive cases running through large families has greatly impacted attendance and ability to learn. The majority of my students do not have home computers, and those who do have not had sufficient internet services.
Though the district provided individual computers to all students and hot spots for those who needed it, internet providers and excessive use reduced access.
Larger families made it impossible for students to find a quiet place to work and fought noise from other family members on computers and the tv, younger siblings crying, and the need to babysit younger siblings or cousins. The majority of my students truly missed a year and a half of education, which might severely impact their ability to graduate on time.
My students have an end-of-the-year travel research project where they research another country to discover the location, climate, customs, food, etc. Students are given high-level vocabulary with pictures to help them describe their county. The pictures are posted thoughout the room. Color pictures are vital to fully understand words like verdant, majestic, picturesque, etc., yet I do not have a color printer to provide the best examples for students learning a new language. Also, color-printed examples from previous student projects to help with understanding what is expected would be greatly beneficial.
A tablet would also allow me to move through the room with a device where I can conference side-by-side with students about their projects at their desks and make recommendations as we are simulataneously viewing the intense project. I would be able to make suggestions on my device that they will see on their screen for better conferencing.
