My Project
Traumatic experiences have a powerful impact on the developing brain, including emotional regulation, attention, and learning. Exposure to trauma, including racism, bullying, homelessness, food insecurity, and other types of distress can cause a trauma response. For students in school, this can lead to challenges with academic performance, inappropriate behavior in the classroom, and difficulty forming relationships.
The students that I serve come from underserved communities, and many of our students have been affected by traumatic events.
The books and educational materials requested will support me in increasing my skills and knowledge around providing trauma-sensitive approaches in the high school setting. Additionally, I am in need of resources to create a safe and calming space next to my office space that can be used as warm and inviting meeting space to provide therapeutic groups to support students. As a School Social Worker, the knowledge learned about trauma-sensitive practices will allow me to provide more effective support and consultation to School Administrators, Teachers and school staff members with incorporating trauma-sensitive practices into the classroom and overall school setting. Students who are exposed to trauma-sensitive supports and interventions in school increase their ability to effectively manage and cope with daily stressors as well as improve their ability to achieve academic success. My hope is to provide the necessary supports and resources to students so that their past traumas do not serve as a barrier to their school success.
