In the U.S, on June 4, 2013, the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency launched the U.S. Food Waste Challenge, calling on entities across the food chain, including farms, agricultural processors, food manufacturers, grocery stores, restaurants, universities, schools, and local governments. Furthermore, decomposing food waste produces methane, a strong greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Worldwide, one-third of food produced is thrown away uneaten, causing an increased burden on the environment.
One of the goals is to use recycle food waste to to create compost, bioenergy, and natural fertilizers.
We aim to turn trash to treasure by composting at least 25% of students' leftover lunches by the end of this year and use it to fertilize our garden!
