Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine sitting in a classroom in a foreign country and learning Science at the same time? My English as a Second Language students do so on a daily basis and aspire to become doctors, meteorologists, and scientists. With these resources in our class there is no doubt that they will excel!

I teach 7th grade Science to 85+ students at a Title I FOCUS School in North Carolina.

Each student I teach is considered to be working towards English proficiency and my classroom consists of students that speak over 13 different languages. Despite the language barrier, my students are creative and investigative critical thinkers that dream big. A large majority of my students are economically disadvantaged and would highly benefit from dictionaries, books, and relevant magazines that help build vocabulary skills. Although my students face a variety of obstacles at home, they still come to school with a positive attitude and an urgency to learn. Not only do they have to learn Science, but they must continue to build their English on a daily basis.

My Project

For some English speakers, scientific vocabulary may seem daunting at times, however, for my students, scientific vocabulary seems daunting the majority of the time. Not only do my students have to learn Science content, but they also must learn English at the same time. With resources such as dictionaries, books like "Nervous System" and "The Heart: Our Circulatory System", and a subscription to Weekly Reader magazine in our classroom, the language barrier will become a thing of the past. The dictionaries will be used to help translate new words, while Current Science and Health subscriptions from Weekly Reader will provide relevant vocabulary and language reinforcement. In addition, the books will engage them and encourage them to believe that reading in English is fun! By infusing literacy into our classroom, each of my students will be able to not only learn Science content, but they will also be able to gain confidence in their use of English. Their confidence will then translate to success in Science!

My students deserve to have the resources that will help them excel in the classroom and reach their goals.

By having these resources in my class, my students will be able to learn English through the Sciences. With these dictionaries, magazines, and books my students will have the tools they need to translate Science into success.
