Transforming Trauma: Mindfulness, Art, and Graphic Novels

My Students

I am the school librarian at a public school in the Brandywine School District that is Title I. The past year has been challenging for all of us, but our students are some of the most vulnerable, and least privileged in our state.

I have developed a class that explores the power of narrative and mindfulness, in an attempt to help our students work through the traumas they have experienced this past year.

And I am using a powerful tool to help me in this process - the graphic novel!

My Project

My students need healing. They need to sit with each other and share stories. I will spend this semester guiding them through mindful practices, while using the power of narrative to help them find calm and resilience. How will I help them find nourishment, connection, peace, and playfulness? Through the graphic novel - one of their favorite forms of media! Middle schoolers love graphic novels, and lucky for them they have a teacher who loves them too!

Students will read graphic novels that feature protagonists who are in some way different from them, and who are struggling: after the reading and dialogue process, students will create their own graphic novels.

We have the graphic novels (through an amazing donors choose bounty of generosity last year).

I just realized today, that if each of these students were to be gifted a set of markers to prize and value, they would feel very special. They would feel as though people cared to hear their stories. ***Use of markers to come with an extensive lesson on care, responsibility, and proper use.***
