My Students

I am a proud teacher of one-hundred forty-two 6th and 7th grade science students! My hardworking scientists come from a wonderfully diverse, but very high-need community in New York. Over 90% of our school’s population is learning English as a second language and fall well below the poverty line. Despite the obstacles and lack of resources in their lives outside of school, my students are always eager to learn and make the most of every experience in the classroom.

My English language learning students often struggle to learn and express themselves with words.

Therefore, we have developed a strong appreciation for learning through visuals and kinesthetics. I have discovered that my students display (and develop) the most confidence when given the opportunity to learn by seeing and doing, such as when we baked fresh bread to explore how to design and perform controlled experiments, or when we built models of the Earth utilizing images from textbooks and colorful clay. However, as a first-year teacher, I cannot reasonably afford to keep up with the demands of my enthusiastic scientists! For example, when I taught my students about cinder-cone volcanoes, I had no choice but to rely on the archaic visuals offered by the school's textbooks, rather than showing video-clips of the recent volcanic eruptions in Indonesia. Furthermore, so much of science learning is based on studying models that are constantly changing, and the lack of technological resources offered by the school has made it extremely difficult to keep up-to-date with modern science.

My Project

My students need an LCD multimedia projector in order to view (and experience!) current science through high-quality images, educational videos, and PowerPoint presentations. I have witnessed major success in my classroom when students are given the opportunity to learn with their own eyes and hands. When my students are able to transcend their language barriers, they show amazing personal connections with the content, which I know will take them far. My students would greatly benefit from an LCD projector so that they can access the plethora of colorful, beautiful, detailed images and videos available online (all the way from Indonesia!) into our classroom.

Your generosity will secure my students with the tools they need to be successful in scientific observation and exploration.

Furthermore, your generosity will help my students discover and pursue their personal strengths in order to achieve a meaningful, sustaining education. My students and I sincerely thank you for your consideration!
