Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I love math" is a typical phrase you'll hear around the 6th-grade. Students sing multiplication chants, collaborate on grapple tasks, and cheer each other on, when we find a solution. We even cheer for mistakes, because we learn from our mistakes. This is all to reach our big goal, which is College.

My students are creative, compassionate, resourceful, and most of all, driven.

Their curiosity and dedication to their understanding of mathematics is inspiring. A day doesn't pass where a student will go home and research a discussion topic from class, and then bring back their newfound knowledge: Did you know that there are an infinite number of multiples of any number, or that the number 1 is neither prime nor composite? My students live in the densely populated neighborhood of Washington Heights, in New York City. They all qualify for free lunch, based on Federal standards of poverty. Most speak a language other than English at home, and a significant number of my students have special education services as part of their educational plan. Upon entering our middle school in 6th-grade, students are at least 2 years behind in reading and mathematics. They all plan to attend college, and will likely be the first generation in their family to do so.

My Project

We need 8 MarkerBoard tables to reinvent the way our classroom works. Currently, we have 30 rickety, mismatched desks, some of which date back to the 1980s. Our desks were discarded from the previous school that used our classroom. Unfortunately, no amount of cleaning can erase these years of mistreatment. The dedication and creativity of my students needs to be reflected in our work environment. We need a space that encourages collaboration, innovation, and fun. All students will have equal access to the writing surface, during group work and larger projects. The tables will provide immediacy to our work, as students will not need to fuss with scrap paper, post-its, or chart paper. Lastly, I will be able to evaluate, engage, and encourage students more easily.

The eight MarkerBoard tables will completely transform my classroom and teaching practice.

My students need classroom furniture that mirrors who they are, and where they are going. They should be able to seamlessly transition from independent to group work. They should be able to evaluate and explore each other's work. The MarkerBoard tables will allow me to push my students even further, to prepare them for high school, college, and beyond.
