My Students

"The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; and the willingness to learn is a choice. " - Brian Herbert It is amazing how engaged students become when they are the masters of their own learning. Hands on activities coupled with technology create motivated students.

My students come from low income households and most students are not lucky enough to have up to date technology at home.

In school, where they are fortunate enough to have an after school program that allows them to explore the world of engineering and programming, they are not provided with up to date technology that would allow them to explore and engage in robotics at its full potential. Due to a low budget, many students have to share computers, and many of these computers are not compatible with the newest programming software. My students not only have the ability to learn, but the willingness to learn and a yearning to be successful both at the moment and in the future.

My Project

This year we created an after school Lego robotics program/team. We were able to raise money to enter the FLL tournament and gain the necessary supplies to compete. We placed first place for our borough qualifier and advanced to the Javitts center where we placed in two categories. I was so proud of my students and they were in awe at how far we came in such a short time despite all of the technological hardships we faced along the way. We are currently training for next year's competition and are facing the same obstacles with technology. Many of the robots work better using Bluetooth, which is not supported with the computers we are using. The software is not capable with our computers and we often encounter glitches. It is heartbreaking to watch the students working so hard and then seeing an entire weeks worth of programming disappear. With an iPad Pro and case, they will be able to use the latest technology, software and be able to fully experience all that STEM and robotics have to offer.

My eighth graders are looking at high schools that offer robotics and engineering programs and are even thinking about colleges that offer these programs.

At 13, they are already thinking about their future. The amount of effort they put into this program is unbelievable. With an IPad Pro, students will have the technology to allow them to experience Lego robotics, programming and engineering to its full potential and allow us to hopefully advance in next year's competition.
