Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a school teacher & Climate coach in a high-needs neighborhood. Our school is a diverse public high school: 38% Hispanic, 18% Black/African American, 4% Asian, 3% Pacific Islander, 7% Multiracial, 4% Native American, and 29% Caucasian.

I have amazing students who use their diversity and life experiences to their advantage.

Many of my students struggle with challenges outside of school. Many of our students are below the poverty line. Many students are in the foster care system or are homeless. Many are recent immigrants learning English as a second language. They are excited to boost create social change in our community.

They have recently come together with a list of demands to value Black lives at our school. One of their demands focuses on expanding restorative justice.

My Project

In an effort to support, involve, and engage all stakeholders in our community; our school is committing not only to restorative justice but transformative justice. We acknowledge that schooling--especially in racially deserved, underserved neighborhoods like ours--has often caused harm. Regardless of intent, we know the impact of these harms span generations. Relationships built on harm and inequitable power structures are not ones we want to restore. We need to transform.

With these books as guides, our students and staff will learn how to facilitate listening sessions and and community circles to help us hear and implement changes to support all students.

We are excited to be able to share these books and note-taking supplies so we can reflect and learn how to be more effective facilitators together.

We hope this time in distance will help us pause and rebuild to create a more just learning environment. Our students have an incredible moral compass and equity lens. With these tools to add to their leadership skills, they will help guide us through this transformation.
