Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is committed to supporting all students, including those with disabilities, by creating environments where they can thrive academically and emotionally. Recently, we've welcomed more high-needs students, particularly those with autism, who require specific sensory supports to excel in the classroom. The project we're proposing aims to establish a sensory-friendly classroom that fosters calmness and concentration, essential for effective learning. The items we've carefully selected—weighted blankets, bean bags, Bluetooth speakers, and LED fairy lights—are integral to achieving this goal.
Weighted blankets offer deep pressure stimulation, proven to calm the nervous system and enhance focus, thereby reducing anxiety during lessons.
Bean bags provide versatile seating options that accommodate individual comfort needs, ensuring students can concentrate without the distraction of discomfort. Bluetooth speakers will enable us to play soothing music, which has been shown to ease transitions and maintain a serene atmosphere conducive to learning. Additionally, LED fairy lights offer a gentle alternative to harsh fluorescent lighting, creating a comforting ambiance that enhances feelings of security and stability for our students.
These sensory tools are not just amenities; they are critical components that will significantly enhance our students' educational experience. By addressing their specific sensory needs, we can cultivate an environment where they feel supported and empowered to engage fully in their learning journey. Our students with autism bring unique perspectives and talents to our classrooms, and it's our responsibility to provide them with the tools they need to succeed.
