Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As the school social worker, I get to see how resilient our students truly are. Many of our students deal with a number of difficult and challenging home situations that can impact them in school. Many struggle with anxiety and depression, especially since the Pandemic. This past school year I realized that sometimes talk therapy is just not enough. In June of 2022, I graduated from a yoga teacher program called Breathe for Change and am now a registered Yoga teacher and Social-Emotional Learning facilitator. Through this work, I hope to teach students additional Social-emotional learning skills.
I love how inquisitive and open minded my students have been about learning new mindfulness tools.
We already have the yoga mats and space in the school building. Now we are just looking to get these additional materials to really create the sense of tranquility my students need and deserve. These materials will help create a "tranquility room" in our school that will be available to the entire school community for classroom use, lunch time and after school. The tranquility room will provide a space where they can learn mindfulness practices like mediation and breathwork as well as yoga practices. My hope is to bring wellness to the school community and help students develop self-awareness, self-control, and build their interpersonal skills that are vital for not only school but work and life success. Research shows that individuals with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally and socially.
