My Students

There is nothing like the look of awe, wonder, and excitement that lights the faces of children that want to learn. I am asking for help to bring to life learning in a small gymnasium in the heart of an area of Queens, NY serving a high-needs population. The vast majority of our students come from Latin countries, and often do not have formal schooling prior to coming to us. English is not their first language and they are compelled to try to comprehend all that is going on before them. It can be scary and daunting, but I believe with the right tools (and lots of love) we can reach these students and make a difference in their learning.

My Project

I would love to create a physical education setting that helps young students learn to calm their minds and exercise their bodies. Students (and perhaps some teachers) will use these yoga mats to begin to learn simple poses in conjunction with each month of the year.

In an age where so much is ruled by technology and constant stimulation, I want to teach kids ways of calming themselves and feeling good.

By learning simple yoga poses (starting with animals), children will gain additonal ways of self-soothing and coping with difficult situations. I am also hoping to encourage more movement and exercise, to get our students out of the typical 'hunched over a cell phone or iPad-pose'!
