Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the school year starts, the media is full of stories about the growing role of technology in education. Although I embrace technology in my own teaching, I am continuously delighted to see how genuinely excited my students still become while holding something as decidedly low-tech as a novel.

My school is located in the South Bronx, and my students generally live in poverty.

My school has always worked to find ways to give our students the same experiences that they would receive in the best schools in less challenged environments. Part of this has meant that we have become the sole source of reading material for most of our families. Very few of our students are afforded the opportunity to walk into a book store and buy a book, yet they have shown that they are willing to invest the time into reading when they are offered the same high-quality, engaging books that other children across the country are reading. Our students are incredibly diverse and indeed arrive at our school from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Some of our students are living with disabilities. Many of our students are growing up in non-traditional households. We hope to build classroom libraries that reflect this diversity.

My Project

My students need books such as "Just Jake" and "The Wednesday Wars" in order to participate in our Social Issues Book Club unit in reading workshop. We believe that book clubs are a powerful instructional tool. Since our students read at a variety of different reading levels, each student is usually reading a different book from his or her classmate. When students are able to read the same book together with others in a book club, however, we see greater engagement and accountability. When they know that others are depending on them to read a certain number of pages each night, we see their reading volume increasing. When they know that they are going to have to talk to others about what they are reading, they think more deeply about what they are reading. When they have the opportunity to hear the thoughts of others, they learn important lessons about how a text can be interpreted and experienced different ways by different readers.

Book clubs are currently challenging in that we don't possess multiple copies of the kinds of texts that would allow us to investigate the theme of social issues in literature.

This is a study that is especially important for our school in that many of our students are living in the midst of these issues; from poverty to immigration to the loss of loved ones to bullying. Our students' lives will change when they are able to see themselves in books and share in conversations with club members.
